Job Overview
The purpose of this role is caring for residents entrusted with us at the Immigration Removal Centre: ensuring the highest standards of security, welfare, dignified treatment, integrity and respect
A DCO may be assigned to specific teams such as Gatehouse, Residential, Admissions and Discharge, Welfare, as required.
24-hour service, 365 days a year
Rolling Shift pattern covering both days and nights.

Main Duties & Responsibilities
- Security & Protection
- Ensure residents are securely held at the facility, rigorously following all relevant security procedures
- Administer effective control and restraint techniques, strictly to trained requirements, in situations where residents present a threat to themselves or others
- Act within the law at all times in the handling of residents, ensuring their security and safety whilst respecting their rights and dignity
- Search individuals, premises and surrounding areas, as necessary, confiscating forbidden items so that safety and security is maintained
- Receive and release individuals and property in line with company procedures to prevent incorrect release / detention of residents, loss or misdirection of property
Health, Safety & Wellbeing
- Ensure the safe accommodation and detention of residents at the centre so they do not come to harm: strictly adhering to any “Assessment, Care, Detention and Teamwork” (ACDT) plans put in place
- Pro-actively identify, report using assigned procedures and computer systems, and then direct to support services, any resident suffering a deterioration in physical or mental health and wellbeing, or exhibiting behaviours of concern
Care in Custody
- Engage with residents and answer questions they may have, escalating any complex issues to the manager for advice
- Participate in, support and encourage residents to engage in recreational activities, arts, crafts and other opportunities for cultural expression

- Adhere to, and promote in others an environment, free from unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation: for both residents and team colleagues
Other Duties
- Ensure best practice and company policies and procedures are followed to achieve contract requirements
- Work as an effective, cohesive DCO team in support of centre objectives and requirements
- Carry out any necessary shift audits, administration, and counts of residents, reporting accurately as required in a timely manner on our systems
- Carry out any other duties required by managers that could be reasonably expected at this level of role capability
Employer Expectations Skills/Knowledge/Experiences
- Confidence in working with individuals with behaviours that may challenge the services
- Able to assess and manage risk of individuals
- Competent in Basic-level skills in Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel and central IT systems (e.g. Data entry and ability to access information about residents)
- Able to work flexibly to meet requirements of the service
- Inter-personal skills: Confident engaging with a wide and diverse range of people, with sensitivity, dignity and respect
- Interacts with residents easily, quickly building rapport but maintaining professional distance
- Treats residents with respect as individuals and encourages residents to do the same to others
- Shows empathy and compassion
- Is observant
